I met João while photographing Vera&Nuno’s wedding. Impossible to get unnoticed, either for the cheerful energy and character or the contagious curiosity that surrounds everything he does. It was this curiosity that gave me this shot of his friends reacting to one of his own creations while gazing with deep interest to one of his bottles of carob aguardente. The groom was even more in awe by the handmade leather Photo Album reminiscent of the old scrapbook, but with a level of craftsmanship we just don’t see anymore. He engages me with his notable curious ways and asked me to show him my peculiar leather strap from Angelo Pelle, the famous braided extra soft yellow one. In a second he decided to meet the challenge of creating a pair of leather straps, custom made for me with national leather. My first reaction was of surprise, you see creatives like João don’t do it for the money or for others, they do it for the basic need to create something extraordinary. I’ll save you the details of our exchanged emails that ended with my address, today is my 34th birthday and when the postman rang the door I wasn’t expecting anything and was puzzled. To my surprise a box “Fragile” and with the words “Wishes for a Merry Christmas” and João’s name on it.
The rest what can I say, “Here’s to the Crazy Ones”
Best wishes João and thank you for your amazing energy and generosity.
“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”
