Photographing without interrupting
I don’t pose people or set up moments for the camera. I follow the day quietly, photographing what happens between people.
How I look at a wedding
A wedding is not a photo shoot. It is a day of family and friends, and that is what I care about. I am there as a guest: present, attentive, without changing the course of things.
I don’t look for pretty pictures for their own sake. I look for what people feel and how they relate to each other. That is what gives photographs their value when they are seen many years from now.
I have learned more from the history of photography — Eugene Smith, Saul Leiter, Robert Frank, Walker Evans, August Sander — than from the trends of the moment. I work with the light that is there, without flash.
I don’t enter competitions. Photography, like the other arts, is not a race, and the way each of us sees is personal. That is why I photograph and edit every wedding myself.
Almost every couple who writes to us already knows the work, from a wedding they attended or through someone’s recommendation.
